Walking on Air: Using Air to Stabilize for Roller Forming
Keeping the Part Safe & Secure

Ever get a new pair of shoes that feel like they were made just for your feet? They hug and support your feet and just feel good. You’re walking on air. You feel supported- like you could run for miles.
The same is true for parts that interact with our air collet fixturing, especially when combined with a thru-spindle pressure pad. Together the air collet and thru-spindle pressure pad hold the part safe and secure.
It starts with fixturing that looks almost standard, except the cylindrical post is segmented in a number of pieces, in most cases three. There are small holes in this piece that allow air to flow through the fixture. This airflow moves the pieces of the fixture keeping the part in place. This is especially useful when used in combination with the thru-spindle pressure pad, which applies clamp load to the part, keeping the part locked in place.
With these considerations the part is able to withstand the roller forming taking place, allowing for clean and aesthetically pleasing parts. These products are a few of the many options for Orbitform Machinery. For a full list of options, click here.
